Over the past decade, building envelope construction has rapidly evolved toward the widespread use of rainscreen systems from residential projects to commercial projects. Rainscreens need to repel water and durable enough to withstand other environmental forces (wind, sun, and extreme temperatures) and do so over time. For the purpose of this course, we will focus on the how extruded porcelain’s unique design and engineering is changing the rainscreen industry and how extruded porcelain can be used to meet project aesthetic, budget, and performance goals.

This course will explore the design, material, and technological approaches to wall and window assemblies, how extruded porcelain can contribute to a project from product quality and cost to the energy saving effects, fire and combustibility testing, maintenance requirements, building codes installation ease, respond to exterior environmental impacts, and compare different cladding materials.

Objectives:
• Explain how extruded porcelain double ventilated rainscreens protect the building envelope against moisture intrusion and the transfer of thermal energy.
• Describe the manufacturing process and performance benefits of extruded porcelain.
• Identify the different types of rainscreens available, and which are more durable and sustainable.
• Outline the best practices for installing extruded porcelain double ventilated rainscreen system.
