This class is part of AIA+2030, a ten-session Professional Series to help design professionals create buildings that meet the energy efficiency goals of the 2030 Challenge.
Integrated design is fundamental to the creation of next-generation 2030 Challenge compliant buildings. In this kickoff session to the AIA+2030 Professional Education series, we will explore how the Integrated Design Process (IDP) and Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) are critical components of high performance building design. We will explore how it can be used to select collaborative strategies that collectively achieve the targets outlined in the 2030 Challenge, and how this process can be used as a roadmap throughout the entire design process. In particular, we will examine the utility of IDP in defining core, early design decisions such as building form and orientation.

Heather Holdridge, LEED® AP BD+C, EIT, Assoc. AIA is the Sustainability Manager at Lake|Flato Architects, a firm that has gained national recognition for architecture that successfully responds to its particular place while seamlessly integrating with the natural environment. Leveraging her background in mechanical engineering, Heather directs all Lake|Flato project teams in establishing achievable sustainability goals. She devises strategies and establishes methods and systems to realize those goals under programs such as LEED, the 2030 Challenge, and the Living Building Challenge. Heather works closely with design teams to evaluate appropriate passive systems and performs energy modeling throughout the design process. Heather’s projects have included the Engineered BioSystems Building at Georgia Tech University; the Austin Central Library; Vanderbilt University’s Engineering and Medicine Building, and the LIVESTRONG Foundation facility. She received a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin and a Master of Business Administration from The University of Texas at San Antonio.
Nishant Kanapilly, LEED® BD+C, holds his Masters in Mechanical Engineering and is currently the Director of Building Analytics for Cleary Zimmermann Engineers. Nishant has more than 9 years of in-depth experience analyzing, optimizing and improving buildings from the outside-in for projects across the United States and internationally. His roles have included project management, quality control, mechanical system design, energy audits, energy modeling, thermal analyses, computational fluid dynamic analyses, façade analyses, renewable energy studies, economic and cost benefit analyses, as well as LEED®, Green Globes, and other international rating system compliance on a wide range of building types. Nishant is a passionate advocate of integrated design, believing that great building designs are accomplished through deliberate analysis of climate, natural resources, building physics and energy.
Douglas D. Pierce, AIA, LEED® FELLOW, SMaRT® AP is a Senior Associate and LEED Fellow with Perkins+Will in Minneapolis. He has over 25 years of experience in sustainable design + planning beginning with the Meadow Creek Project in 1984. His work includes Minnesota's first LEED Platinum Certified project, Great River Energy Headquarters. Great River Energy is also an American Institute of Architects National Top 10 green project for 2009 and one of the very first 2030 Challenge projects in the U.S. Doug is a national and international speaker on the topic of energy + integrative design. His unique approach to design includes cross-discipline integration using whole systems thinking and pattern recognition. Doug has co-directed the Perkins+Will Minneapolis Green Team since 2001 with planning responsibilities for over 3 Million square feet of Energy Efficient and LEED Silver, Gold, Platinum + Living Building projects nationally and worldwide including The Embassy Hospital in Colombo Sri Lanka, Green Spaces in New Delhi India, Microsoft Fargo, Best Buy’s High-Performance Retail Store Prototypes and Target Corporation’s LEED retail store program. He annually co-teaches the Minnesota 2030 program for professional architects, engineers + building owners along with graduate level sustainable design theory and practice courses at the University of Minnesota and the Minneapolis College of Art + Design.
