AIA Dallas 2020 Emerging Leaders Program: June Update Dallas Pets Alive Project

The Dallas Pets Alive and AIA Dallas Emerging Leaders Program collaboration continues through the adversity of the coronavirus pandemic. Design teams have been working diligently with Leslie, DPA Founder and Executive Director, to develop the project program, schedule and determine the benefits/challenges of the permanent and the mobile prototypes.

As the pandemic evolved, DPA had to pivot to a more flexible foster and adoption model to continue their operations. 90 percent of adoptions have switched to online, with a 308 percent increase in foster/adoption from April 2019 to April 2020. Dallas Animal Services has limited their services to 5 schedule animal drop offs per day and there has been no increase in stray animals. The North Texas community has embraced fostering and adopting responsibly.

In response to the challenges of current events and overwhelming positive response to fostering/adopting animals, Leslie directed us to focus on the mobile pop-up prototype and our two teams began developing multiple design concepts. The mobile concept will allow DPA to be more flexible, travel to adoptions centers for last chance rescues, deliver the pets to your home, and reduce the three-month adoption process. The innovative approach to animal rescue will create a shift in the way our community views animal rescue.

The team has developed seven schemes for Dallas Pets Alive to determine which will work best with their mission of promoting and providing resources for best animal adoption practices in North Texas. Tune in to the next blog to discover which design concept or combination thereof will be selected by Leslie and the Dallas Pets Alive building committee.
